4 Things To Do To Get Your Home Ready For Fall

I know we’ve all loved the 120-degree heat index over the last few weeks, but it’s almost time for cooler weather.  Preparing for fall as a homeowner involves a combination of maintenance, safety measures, and ensuring a comfortable living environment. Here are four things homeowners typically do to get ready for the fall season:

  1. Gutter Cleaning and Maintenance: Fall brings falling leaves, and clogged gutters can lead to water damage and other issues. Clean out your gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage. Consider installing gutter guards to prevent leaves and debris from accumulating in the future.

  2. HVAC System Check: As the weather cools down, you'll likely start using your heating system. Have your HVAC system inspected and maintained by a professional. This includes checking the furnace or heat pump, cleaning or replacing filters, and making any necessary repairs to ensure efficient and safe operation.  For a list of local HVAC companies, click here.

  3. Sealing and Insulation: To keep your home warm and energy-efficient during the colder months, inspect your windows and doors for drafts. Apply weatherstripping or caulking as needed. Also, check your home's insulation and add more if necessary, particularly in attics and crawl spaces.

  4. Yard and Garden Cleanup: Prepare your yard for the colder months by cleaning up fallen leaves, trimming bushes and trees, and clearing out any garden beds. This helps prevent pests and diseases from overwintering in your yard. Consider aerating and fertilizing your lawn to promote healthy growth next spring.

Remember, these are general guidelines, and the specific tasks you need to complete might vary based on your location, the condition of your home, and the type of climate you experience during the fall. It's always a good idea to create a checklist tailored to your home's needs to ensure a smooth transition into the new season.  If you would like more tips, or maybe you would rather just get a new house instead of working on your current one, contact us!  We can talk about houses and real estate all day!
